Hoeppner is also the subject of a current Vatican investigation. This is the deposition of Bishop Michael Hoeppner. Hoeppner was one of two bishops in the United States initially investigated and ultimately forced to resign under the Vatican’s ‘motu proprio’ Vos Estis Lux Mundi, a new procedure for handling investigations into clergy sexual abuse. Jeff Anderson & Associates represents many survivors with claims against the Diocese of Crookston for abuse they suffered as children. As part of a 2019 settlement of one of those survivors’ claims, secret documents and depositions of top officials were released. Jeff Anderson & Associates provided these documents to Vatican investigators, which were then key to the Vatican’s forced resignation of Bishop Hoeppner. The lawsuits unearthed the key document that Bishop Hoeppner coerced survivor Ron Vasek to sign, which was a centerpiece of the Vatican investigation. At the time, Vasek was a deacon candidate and his son was a priest of the Diocese. Hoeppner threatened Vasek’s son’s priesthood if Vasek did not sign the document.
